Over Christmas and New Years I spent three weeks in Slab City, CA . “Slabs” is a square mile of mostly barren desert (previously a military base) where a community has been living for free on unincorporated land since the 60s. They live in RV's, tents and makeshift shelters - it's off the grid, no running water, electricity, infrastructure or stores.

Many times it felt completely ethereal and I genuinely was unsure if it was some sort of purgatory. The days have this way of repeating but simultaneously I had an overwhelming number of serendipitous moments and beautiful connections.
If you bring anger and hostility then you’ll find violence and maybe death. It you bring sincerity and kindness, you’ll find that too. Those who live there seem to love it and despise it simultaneously. It’s a home, it’s a terror, it’s family, it’s suspicion.

It’s a place to just simply be. To be alone, to be however you want to show up. I’ve never felt so welcomed or at ease to be myself.
